HUH?! “give as alms those things that are within” -Jesus

Scripture I just noticed for the first time this morning

Luke 11:41 (ESV) says: “But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.”

This verse comes in the context of Jesus rebuking the Pharisees. They were meticulous about outward religious rituals—especially cleanliness and tithing—but inwardly they were full of greed and wickedness (see verses 39–40).

Meaning:

Jesus is essentially saying: True generosity, righteousness, and purity begin in the heart. Giving “as alms those things that are within” means offering God your inner life—your motives, your affections, your repentance. If your heart is surrendered to God, then your outward actions (like giving or ceremonial cleanliness) will be truly clean in His eyes.

In modern terms:

Jesus is challenging us not to just play religious games or go through spiritual motions. If your heart is corrupt, no amount of religious behavior makes you “clean.” But if you give God your heart—your honesty, love, and humility—then your life reflects true holiness.

Much love to you all!
